Austrian pubcaster unit planning new digital platform
13 Dec 10 -

Austrian public broadcaster ORF’s transmission services subsidiary ORS is planning to develop a common platform for the distribution of digital TV services, including HD, by satellite and digital-terrestrial, according to local press.

The technology company, which is 60%-owned by ORF, plans to develop a platform on the lines of the HD Plus service developed for Germany by SES Astra, according to the reports. It would facilitate the distribution of free and pay TV and on-demand services via a combination of digital satellite, a DVB-T2-based digital-terrestrial platform, and connected TV.

According to the reports, the platform could include premium services and pay-per-view movies.

The Luxembourg-based M7-backed Austrian satellite pay TV platform AustriaSat has said it will launch a German-language HD package in the spring of next year. The company, which uses technology from ORS, currently offers 14 pay channels on the Astra satellite platform.
