Using a completely amateur cast drawn from rural farms, Olmi's contemplative, elegiac film is a beautifully shot record of a vanished way of life.

(Subtitles, Subtitled, In Italian with English Subtitles, 1978, 12, 4 Star)

 Only Yesterday (Film)
From Japan's Studio Ghibli comes this animation from Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. Put-upon office worker Taeko suddenly recalls how in 1966, when visiting her sister to help harvest the saffron flowers, she fell for a handsome young farmer but turned him down for the lure of the big city. In her daydream, she wonders what life could have been and what he's doing now.
Director: Isao Takahata
Starring: Miki Imai, ToshirĂ´ Yanagiba, Youko Honna
(Widescreen, Subtitles, Subtitled, In Japanese with English Subtitles, 1991, PG, 4 Star)

13:25
 Terry Gilliam Interview (Entertainment)
Terry Gilliam, the visionary director of Brazil, Time Bandits and of the new release The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus, talks about his personal approach to making films.

13:35
 The Spy in Black (Film)
Michael Powell's classic espionage thriller stars Conrad Veidt as Captain Hardt, a First World War German submarine commander-turned-spy sent to the Orkneys, where he is foiled by a double agent Jill Blacklock.
Director: Michael Powell
Starring: Conrad Veidt, Sebastian Shaw, Valerie Hobson, Marius Goring, June Duprez, Athole Stewart
(Black and White, Subtitles, 1939, U, 4 Star)

15:15
 The Human Jungle (Film)
Gary Merrill plays police captain John Danforth, who has just passed his bar exams and is about to leave the force when he's asked to take on one last assignment, the toughest of his career. The Heights district is almost lawless, with a demoralised force fighting a tide of crime. Danforth soon realises the enormity of his task when a murder investigation sees him obstructed by both sides, but he cracks the case and whips his men into shape in Joseph M Newman's tough crime thriller.
Director: Joseph M. Newman
Starring: Gary Merrill, Jan Sterling, Regis Toomey, Lamont Johnson, Patrick Waltz, Chuck Connors
(Black and White, 1954, 12, 3 Star)

16:50
 Escape to Athena (Film)
George P Cosmatos' wartime thriller is set on an unnamed Greek island where German officer Otto Hecht runs a slack PoW camp where prisoners include Stefanie Powers, David Niven, Richard Roundtree, Sonny Bono and Elliott Gould. The prisoners are charged with identifying and gathering the island's antique treasures for shipment to Germany, but when they come across an invaluable collection, there's a chance to line their own pockets - if they can involve Hecht in their scheme and avoid the attentions of the local upright SS officer. An enjoyable caper movie, very much like Kelly's Heroes but with better weather, the film also stars Telly Savalas as a partisan who offers to help the group, and Claudia Cardinale as a local brothel owner who gets caught up in the plan. Edited for violence and language.
Director: George P. Cosmatos
Starring: Roger Moore, Telly Savalas, David Niven, Stefanie Powers, Claudia Cardinale, Richard Roundtree
(Widescreen, Subtitles, 1979, PG, 3 Star)

19:10
 Just Married (Film)
In Shawn Levy's romantic comedy, Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy play Tom Leezak and Sarah McNerney, a chalk-and-cheese couple who fall in love and marry. Now, all they need for the union to work is to survive both families disapproval of the match, deal with the well-meaning friends who meddle too much and, on their honeymoon, suffer a selection of Europe's worst accommodation. Edited for language.
Director: Shawn Levy
Starring: Ashton Kutcher, Brittany Murphy, Christian Kane, David Moscow, Monet Mazur, David Rasche
(2003, 12, 2 Star)

21:00
 Judge Dredd (Film)
Judge Dredd first appeared in 1977 in the British comic book 2000 AD. This first, and only, screen incarnation stars Sylvester Stallone as THE LAW in the dystopian Megacity. Dredd and his colleague Judge Hershey dispense instant justice on the streets until he's found guilty of murdering a TV newsman. He's sent to Aspen Prison Colony, but his authority is badly missed when ex-Judge Rico begins wreaking havoc in Megacity for another megalomaniac Judge's own ends. Of course Dredd is innocent, framed by Rico, and tries to get free to rid Megacity of more scum. Danny Cannon's film sticks closely to the comic book ethos, with a knowing camp humour and the violence suggested rather than explicit. Rob Schneider stars as comic relief Fergie, one of Dredd's informants, while Jurgen Prochnow and Max von Sydow bring gravitas as senior Judges Griffin and Fargo.
Director: Danny Cannon
Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Diane Lane, Armand Assante, Rob Schneider, JĂĽrgen Prochnow, Max von Sydow
(Widescreen, Subtitles, 1994, 15, 3 Star)

22:50
 Vera Drake (Film)
Mike Leigh's Oscar-nominated and BAFTA Award-winning film stars Imelda Staunton in the title role as a working class wife and mother in post-war London who makes ends meet by cleaning for the upper-class as well as caring for her elderly mother and invalid neighbour. But she also helps girls "in trouble", from the daughters of her employers to the local women who cannot afford another mouth to feed. Although abortion is illegal, Vera sees it as a service rather than a money-making venture and her shock when one of her abortions goes wrong and she is arrested is believably palpable. With a supporting cast including Jim Broadbent, Phil Davis and Heather Craney, this is one of Leigh's most stunning, moving films.
Director: Mike Leigh
Starring: Imelda Staunton, Richard Graham, Eddie Marsan, Anna Keaveney, Alex Kelly, Daniel Mays
(Subtitles, 2004, 12, 3 Star)

01:15

Director: Joel Schumacher
Starring: Julia Roberts, Campbell Scott, Vincent D'Onofrio, Colleen Dewhurst, David Selby, Ellen Burstyn
(Widescreen, Subtitles, 1991, 15, 3 Star)

As Nameless recounts his exploits in flashback, each time the wily King responds with his version. Is Nameless a true servant of Qin or does he have a secret agenda?  House of Flying Daggers (Film)
Following hot on the heels of Hero, director Zhang Zimou brings another beautifully filmed, artistic and impressive Chinese film to the big screen. Like its predecessor, it's a "wuxia" film, dealing with classic swordplay and chivalry themes. Alongside these traditional aspects there's the very modern 21st century CGI, which allows the daggers of the title to do their flying, as well as enhancing the balletic style of much of the action. The plot concerns a blind outlaw who's tricked by a couple of cops into betraying a band of killers. But the plot is largely subservient to the supremely well choreographed martial arts action.
