French free-to-air DTT channels are about to break even for the most part, or are already profitable, reports daily Le Figaro.

Leading channels TMC (AB Groupe/TF1) and W9 (M6) would have garnered â,¬75m of ad revenues last year while they spent â,¬50m. AB Groupe’s second channel NT1 would have broken even in 2009 thanks to â,¬35m of ad revenues, shortly followed by NRJ 12 and Gulli.

Forecasting â,¬40m in ad revenues, Direct 8’s General Director Yannick Bolloré expects his channel will break even this year, two years before the channel’s business plan forecast.

The situation would be less easy for Virgin 17 (Lagardère

Active), as well as news channels BFM TV and I>Télé as costs may be higher and ad revenues lower.
