The EU is helping support the DVB transmission standard in Uruguay. Most other regions in South America have bought into the rival Japanese/Brazilian ISDB television broadcasting standard.

The European Union (EU) has signed a cooperation agreement with the Uruguayan Ministry of Industry to adopt the DVB digital TV European standard. According to the European Union General Director of International Affairs for Asia and Latin America, Stefano Sannino, the EU will give financial help towards the cost of the start-up.

The EU official explained to the morning paper El País that with such a contribution "Uruguay will be able to start analogue-to-digital television migration". According to Sannino, Uruguay holds positions "very similar" to those of the EU's, therefore "dialogue and cooperation in science and technology, technological innovation and information technologies will be enhanced".

In March, Uruguay’s neighbour Paraguay will confirm which digital TV standard it will adopt.
