Gehua Cable chooses BigBand Networks to support introduction of interactive HDTV and broadband Internet service

BigBand Networks, Inc.a leader in digital video networking, announced that Beijing Gehua Cable TV Network (“Gehua Cable” SH: 600037) has selected BigBand’s industry-leading broadband Edge QAM BEQ platform to deliver its new interactive HDTV and broadband internet service.

Gehua Cable operates the broadcasting and cable TV network as well as reception and transmission of broadcasting and cable TV programs within the Beijing municipal area. The large-scale cable network covers all 18 districts and transmits more than 100 channels to 3.2 million people.

“We are delighted that Gehua Cable has expanded our relationship and selected the BigBand BEQ platform,” said David W. Heard, chief operating officer of BigBand Networks. “BigBand continues to lead the market in QAMs and now we’re bringing this industry-leading platform to China to support new services like interactive HDTV. Our BEQ platform’s superior RF performance and reliability enable our customers to deliver the highest quality for today’s services and tomorrow’s advanced applications at a significantly reduced operational cost.”

With more than 700,000 QAMs shipped to more than 60 service providers worldwide over the life of its edge QAM platforms, BigBand is an industry leading QAM provider. The BEQ family of edge QAM platforms is designed to provide combined support for broadcast, switched digital video, video on demand, IP video, Modular CMTS, and DOCSIS® applications, including 3.0-compatible video delivery service with less energy use. The BEQ’s resilient architecture is designed for superior performance and scalability, while enhancing the delivery of digital television services at a low total cost of ownership.

In addition to the BEQ, the BigBand Broadband Multimedia-Service Router (BMR®) was adopted by Gehua Cable. In October of 2008, Gehua Cable provided coverage of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics Games using BigBand’s BMR. BigBand’s BMR platform continues to be used today in Gehua’s digital TV network headend system to reliably deliver video content to Beijing’s residents.
