Majority of US TV households have HD
Michelle Clancy    | 22-10-2012

As HD continues to revolutionise the quality of the TV watching experience, more than three quarters of US households have an HDTV setâ€"that's up 14% from last year, according to a recent study by Nielsen.
And to boot, nearly 40% of those homes have multiple HD sets. The figure is likely to continue to trend upwards as bulky standard definition sets are swapped out for sleeker and more technologically-sophisticated models, Nielsen noted.
"Television has come a long way since the grainy black and white sets of old. While there have been constant advancesâ€"from the introduction of color to the remote control to connected TVs (IPTV)â€"the advent of High Definition TV (HDTV) could be considered one of the high-water marks," the company said in its blog.
Nielsen is quick to point out that not all HD is equal, though. In May 2012, 61% of all prime viewing was done on an HD set, but that does not necessarily denote actual HD viewing was happening. "True HD, using an HD set top box or tuner in a home that receives HD channels and actually tuned to an HD signal, is the only way to experience legitimate HDTV bliss," the company said.
During that same month, 29% of English-language broadcast prime viewing and 25% of cable prime viewing was true HD. The gap between HD potential and true HD viewing leaves a wide berth for consumers to bridge. The study also noted that among cable networks, as expected, sports and entertainment genres are more likely to be viewed in HD as compared to news and kids programming.
To put together the results, Nielsen conducted a study of 17 networksâ€"five English-language broadcast networks and 12 ad-supported cable networksâ€"during May 2012 and accounted for the share of total tuning watched in True HD vs. all other ways to watch on a TV.

Pay-TV, OTT getting less competitive to each other
Michelle Clancy    | 22-10-2012

About 12% of consumers are willing to pay up to $10 per month for a premium video tier, while another 26% would pay $5 more, according to a new report from Heavy Reading. Cost sensitivity remains very high, consistent with the previous years since 2008.
Meanwhile, satisfaction is comparatively high for most service attributes and more than 40% of subscribers are staying with their pay TV providers for five years or more.
ISPs, however, are in a sensitive position with regard to subscribers' over-the-top (OTT) experience: More than one in eight would definitely switch providers for a better online video experience. Other findings include that 16% would pay for a "boost button" at $1 per use for online video, while 31% would pay for a white-listed site which would always offer a higher Quality of Experience at $1 per site per month.
Nearly 10% fewer respondents said that pay-TV and OTT services were not competitive compared with last year â€" a notable shift, although not in itself suggestive of sudden imminent changes in the pay TV la$$$cape, researchers noted. And meanwhile, interest continues to be fairly high for various multiscreen/connected services; although mobile video and videoconferencing ranked lower than other options.
"The findings from this survey illustrate that there is a willingness by consumers to pay for flexible models for premium video delivery services. In fact, there is more interest in these models for in-home usage rather than mobile," says Kishore, a 15-year veteran of the consumer media industry. "It's fitting that a key theme at this year's TelcoTV is profitable services, as the survey results reinforce the opportunity for broadband network service providers to generate revenue through premium video delivery services."
The survey reveals consumer opinions about video consumption across device platforms, provider perceptions and satisfaction levels with video services, and its results will be revealed in full at TelcoTV, taking place 24 to 26 October at the Las Vegas Hotel. Aditya Kishore, senior analyst at Heavy Reading, will present the findings during his keynote address on 24 October. The presentation will provide fresh data and insight into the selection criteria for pay-TV providers and service bundles, and explore shifts in consumer opinion over the past year. It will also evaluate customer satisfaction levels and drivers, churn drivers and the growing consumption of OTT video via multiple devices.

Liberty Global chief Malone hits out at Google
Jörn Krieger    | 22-10-2012

The chairman of US media company Liberty Global, John Malone, has criticised the market power of Google and dema$$$ regulation of the search engine giant.
"Google is simply extremely dominant. I would therefore consider it to be appropriate and about time for the regulator to intervene," Malone told German news magazine "Der Spiegel". He would be certain that regulation would come, "if not in the USA, then in Europe."
Google would have their own development plans, these would "sometimes collide with the interests of Google customers," complained Malone. He added that it would be extremely important "that Google still fi$$$ us - not only their own offering in this business area - and that they will still prominently position us."
Through one of his companies, Malone is a shareholder in internet ventures such as TripAdvisor or Expedia. Both companies have lodged complaints against Google's business practices in the travel market. Both the US trade commission and the European competition authority are currently evaluating whether to commence an anti-trust suit against Google.

DISH doles out 700M to settle Voom litigation with Cablevision, AMC
Editor    | 22-10-2012

The long-running legal saga of whether DISH Network wrongfully terminated a 15-year contract for Voom, a now-defunct HD TV channel owned by Cablevison, has been settled with a huge pay off for the latter and cable TV firm AMC.
The issue began in May 2008 when DISH took Voom off the air for poor ratings and in December of that year AMC's former owner, Cablevision, announced it was shutting the service down. Nonetheless, it sued DISH in 2008 for breach of contract and the issue has lingered on. Meanwhile, DISH's decision to drop AMC's channels from its line-up in July also loomed over the case.
DISH decided to drop AMC's four networks in July, saying the carriage fees AMC wanted were too high considering the popularity of the channels. Outside of Mad Men and Walking Dead and AMC Network, the other three cable nets were considered niche: they include IFC, the Sundance channel and WE tv. AMC, however, accused DISH of using the tactic to force an out-of-court settlement in the lawsuit. DISH's 14 million customers made up 13% of AMC's subscriber base.
As part of the legal agreement, DISH will pay a cash settlement of $700 million to Cablevision and AMC Networks, $80 million of which is in consideration for the purchase of Cablevision’s multichannel video and data distribution service licences in 45 metropolitan areas in the US. It will also enter into a long-term distribution agreement with AMC Networks to carry AMC, IFC, Sundance Channel and WE tv, and with The Madison Square Garden Company to carry Fuse on its satellite service and “convey” its 20% membership interest in Voom HD to Rainbow Programming Holdings, the Cablevison subsidiary that ran Voom, such that all of the cash settlement remains with Cablevision and AMC Networks.
Once the cash settlement is received, the parties will file a joint stipulation to dismiss the lawsuit with prejudice. Cablevision and AMC Networks will then determine how the settlement money they will jointly gain will be split.
Commenting on the deal, AMC Networks President and CEO Josh Sapan said: “We are glad to partner again with DISH Network and are delighted to bring back our popular channels and programming to their customers.”
