Blu-ray boosts DVD sales

France’s video market, which lost one third of its value over the previous four years, stabilized in 2009 thanks to Blu-Ray sales and a reduced delay between the theatre and video releases.

DVD and Blu-Ray sales went up 0.5% to â,¬1.38bn compared to a 8% decrease in 2008, reports video syndicate SEVN. Blu Ray sales have jumped 110% over one year at â,¬110m, now representing 8% of the video market.

For professionals, such encouraging results are also the consequence of the reduced delay, from six to four months, between movies’ theatre release and their video sales (VOD and DVD). Released last summer, the last Harry Potter opus and Ice Age 3 were available in video for the Christmas period.

Another key factor is the retail commercial operations set up by editors. Exposed to rising illicit downloads of movies and TV series, French editors are expecting a lot from the Hadopi law, whose controlling measures should be operational this year between April and July, to fight against pirates or at least educate them.
