Alcatel-Lucent has announced its selection by ZON Multimedia to deploy a gigabit passive optical network (GPON)-based fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) architecture in Portugal. The new system will allow the cablenet to run HDTV services, video-on-demand and VoIP.

ZON will use Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON platform in new areas of expansion and on parts of its network where HFC/FTTH technologies run side by side. The cablenet is one of a number in Europe to run a dual technology strategy.

“Having over 1.5 million customers, ZON is the largest pay-TV operator in Portugal. As a leader, we want to keep on providing end-users with the best solutions on the market,” said Paulo Ribeiro, Board Member of ZON TV Cabo. “Though our network is very competitive and allowing us to successfully offer bandwidth-demanding services, such as HDTV and high-speed Internet, we decided to explore parallel ways to bring the best of multimedia applications to our customers. Alcatel-Lucent’s proven GPON solution and its experience in deploying fiber networks will help us introduce this new technology into our network â€" enabling us to expand our product and services offer to our customers,” he added.

Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its 7342 Intelligent Services Access Manager Fiber-to-the-User (ISAM FTTU) GPON-based platform, which integrates with legacy voice and RF video networks. The company is also supplying its 5520 Access Management System (AMS) as well as a range of optical network terminals (ONTs) to install at the end-users’ premises.
