Playcast’s VOD game service eyes Europe

Israel and UK-based young company Playcast-Media wants to to offer “the first worldwide TV on-demand video game service”, without any console.

To achieve its goal, agreements have been concluded with several leading video game companies including Atari, Capcom, CodeMasters, THQ and independent editors DDI, Strategy First and Zushi, it announced at the San Francisco Game Developers Conference.

The service, currently being tested inhouse by an unnamed international operator, will launch this spring in Israel on cable-operator HOT and should be extended to Europe, USA and Asia before the end of this year.

Playcast Media’s technology allows the on-demand transmission on cable and IPTV services of games at similar quality to consoles such as PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Recent deals will allow the company to offer recent titles as well as long-shelves titles to varied types of consumers, from children and families to more addicted players.

Playcast-Media was founded by Guy de Beer and Dr Nathan Peterfreund, from Harmonic, a provider of broadcast and on-demand video delivery technology. COO and President is Alon Shtruzman.
