Ukraine assesses digital transition

DTT may become available in the Ukrainian city of Donetsk as soon as this September, funding permitting.

AKTR reports that the Ukrainian government tried to implement trial DTT services in nine regional centres on February 4, though they were suspended after four days. A different situation exists in the capital, Kiev, where a DTT service has been up and running for around a year.

The government plans to allocate around UAH363 million (€33.2 million) on digitization, though to date the amount spent is only around UAH7 million.

Set-top boxes are being produced by a Ukrainian company named Meridian, with the first devices being made available this month. A further 2,500 will be produced in March, followed by 2,000 a month afterwards.

It is hoped the political situation in Ukraine will not affect the transition to digital broadcasting, due to be completed by 2015.
