Korea Communications Commission considers allowing 24h broadcasting
The Korea Communications Commission will consider allowing terrestrial broadcasters to broadcast around the clock and test 3-D terrestrial broadcasting next year. These and other plans were revealed in the KCC’s 2010 operations report to President Lee Myung-bak yesterday. Terrestrial broadcasters’ operating hours, are at present limited from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. the next day.
The KCC said that it will also draw up policies regarding new television channels. Television and online advertising markets are also included in the KCC’s plans, which aim to expand combined value of television online advertising markets to 5.5 trillion won ($4.7 billion) by 2012. The combined value of the two markets was 4.2 trillion won last year.
Introducing new broadcasting and telecom technologies is also high on the agenda. The KCC said that 3-D terrestrial broadcasting will be tested during the G20 Summit, making Korea the first in the world to test 3-D technology on terrestrial television. The technology will again be tested during the international athletics event in Daegu in 2011 and during the Yeosu International Expo the following year, the KCC said.
