RTL to block Google TV access
December 4, 2012 08.36 Europe/London By Robert Briel

RTL Deutschland inte$$$ to block Google TV from accessing its online programming.
Google inte$$$ to launch its Google Play service in Germany following the availability of Sony Google TV devices in the German market. Google TV operates with Android software and allows viewers to access on-demand and live streaming television on the internet.
“We intend to cooperate with other television manufacturers,’ told Google spokesperson Mounira Latrache to Deutschen Wirtschafts Nachrichten, “But so far, there are no concrete plans.”
The German RTL group said: “We have a problem with third parties who try to monetise our content at our expense. That’s why we will not make our content available on Google TV.”
Fellow private broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1 is not worried about Google TV, “It is a niche service. In the market for hybrid TV applications it is not the technical service that matter, but the content itself,” according to the group’s spokesperson, Marcus Prosch.
Through its VOD service Maxdome German viewers have access to over 50,000 legal movies and episodes of TV programmes.

BBC connects the Red Button to Virgin
December 4, 2012 12.00 Europe/London By Julian Clover

The BBC has launched a new Connected Red Button service. Starting on Virgin Media, the BBC plans to add the service to other platforms including Freeview and Freesat, as well as a collection of connected TVs.
“MHEG technology doesn’t produce the kind of experience we would love to deliver, but its not the technology we would like to be building on. No matter what kind of spectrum you have it’s never going to be enough,” said Daniel Danker, general manager, programmes and on demand.
Danker explained that after 13 years of service, some 20 million viewers accessed the content on a monthly basis. “It’s taught us how important human expert curation is in bringing complementary content to the television screen.”
Initially Connected Red Button will be available on Virgin Media’s TiVo platform, using a mix of Flash and HTML.
Viewers would press Red on BBC One and be presented with a selection of recent shows from the channel through the iPlayer. There are later plans to add contextual content, for example previous episodes of the show currently being screened, and Restart for those who might have missed the beginning of a show.
News content now allows viewers to join at the start of an item, rather than the point they might have joined a news loop, and if the viewer settles back into their armchair it simply plays the next item.
“In Sport live events will be given priority. We talk about the number of live streams in the red button, but that doesn’t seem enough when compared to the 24 streams we had for the Olympics,” says Danker.
Radio is also present for the first time, offering catchup content, given that the stations themselves are already available on the platform.
The service went live on Virgin Media on Tuesday morning. “We couldn’t be prouder of the long standing relationship we have with the BBC,” said Cindy Rose, executive director, digital entertainment, Virgin Media. “There’s a really deep philosophical alignment between Virgin and the BBC. We’re the only platform that has a curated experience and that’s very important to people.”
Danker said Virgin provided an open platform to developers that was not available on Sky, where the BBC recently launched the iPlayer.
“Sky boxes are increasingly connected, but they run a closed service, so there isn’t a platform, for us to build it on,” said Danker, indicating that he would be happy to add the new Connected Red Button to Sky should its stance change. “This is likely to be just the beginning, not just for the BBC, but for others in the UK. We recently explained the TV application layer and we are sharing that technology with anyone who is interested.”
Conversations have also been held with BT, YouView, Freesat and television manufacturers LG and Samsung.

France 2 to reduce grid cost by €30 million

Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 04-12-2012

French pubcaster France 2 will have to cut its grid cost by €30 million in 2013, deputy MD Philippe Vilamitjana announced at a press conference today.

Such an unprecedented move is due to the fact France Télévisions state allocation will be reduced by €85 million to produce a total budget of €2.45 billion.

Without sport and news spending, France 2's grid cost is currently €514 million. The channel's audience share stood at 15% during 2012.

Vilamitjana indicated that programming cuts would initially come from the extensive use of TV stock, from re-runs, and from price renegotiations with French TV producers.

France 2 also highlighted that it is going to halt the production of scripted reality shows - light fiction based on news items recreated and played out by comedians.

This genre is actually very controversial and has been judged by the French Minister of Communication as not even having a place on the public TV service.

Sony PS3 is Netflix' No. 1 viewing device

Michelle Clancy | 05-12-2012

When it comes to its connected device strategy, Netflix has been a master at getting itself embedded in a range of devices, from connected televisions to Blu-ray players. Now, the online streaming giant says that Sony's PlayStation 3 is the world's most popular device for viewing movies and TV shows from Netflix on a television.

"PS3 is our largest TV-connected platform in terms of Netflix viewing, and this year, at times, even surpassed the PC in hours of Netflix enjoyment to become our No. 1 platform overall," said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, in a statement. "PS3 is a natural fit for Netflix in terms of developing and first deploying our most advanced features. We can transparently update our application with new features on a daily basis, and through the free PlayStation Network, people around the world can sign up for Netflix directly from their PS3."

The revelation dovetails with recent comments from the company. During a keynote at last month's DigiWorld Summit 2012, Netflix's vice president of content Kelly Merryman emphasised that the industry was just at the beginning of seeing what TV can do for viewers, noting that contrary to recent research findings, tablets and mobiles played a small part in its content consumption. Rather, game consoles are the dominant non-TV device. Going forward she expected connected TV to "take up a bigger chunk of the story line."

PS3 was the first computer entertainment system to offer Netflix in full 1080p video resolution with 5.1-channel Dolby Digital Plus surround sound and to offer post play, second screen controls, on device sign-up, and alternate audio options including subtitles. PS3 is also so far the only platform to experience a new voice user interface called "Max" that's currently being tested.

Earlier this year, PlayStation and Netflix expanded their partnership by bringing Netflix to the handheld PlayStation Vita in the United States. PlayStation 3 owners can start watching a movie or TV show on Netflix, pause it, and continue watching on PS Vita's 5-inch high-def OLED screen.

Rogers launches second-screen TV app for iOS

Michelle Clancy | 05-12-2012

Canadian TV operator Rogers Communications has embraced TV Everywhere further with a new app for tablets and smartphones, dubbed Rogers Anyplace TV Home Edition. The app allows users to leverage a mobile device. as a television control device. The second-screen app has first launched in Ontario.

Last December, Rogers introduced Rogers Live TV, the first application available to Canadians that live streams programming on a tablet from anywhere in the home. The new app, for iPad and iPhone now and launching on Android tablets and smartphones later this year, makes it possible to use advanced search, a virtual remote control, live stream news, sports and entertainment, and remotely manage and set PVR content as an addition to the operator's NextBox 2.0 experience.

"Our customers love to combine TV viewing with multitasking," said John Boynton, executive vice president and CMO at Rogers. "By offering TV management features, in addition to live streaming on tablets, customers can control content from a second screen without interrupting what's currently on their TV. This represents the next step in our commitment to delivering the world-leading internet experiences customers want and expect from Rogers."

Caribbean's LIME launches OTT-linear hybrid TV

Michelle Clancy | 05-12-2012

Cable & Wireless Communication's (CWC) Caribbean division, LIME, is rolling out a hybrid TV service that gives LIME subscribers access to more than 130 linear channels as well as over-the-top (OTT) services via a single user interface.

"By leveraging the Internet to deliver a pay-TV service that bundles live content and OTT services, we can further strengthen our broadband value while also increasing our revenue opportunity," said Dianne Bissoon, vice president of TV and Entertainment at LIME.

The service leverages Entone's FusionTV solution as its engine, employing both adaptive bitrate (ABR) and HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technologies for delivery across various network conditions.

"Entone's FusionTV solution allows us to offer a superior entertainment experience to all our customers while also enabling us to quickly rollout new services across our entire broadband footprint without changing set tops," added Bissoon.

LIME's basic TV service channel lineup includes programs from major U.S. networks such as ABC, CBS and NBC, sports from ESPN, music from MTV, children's channel Nickelodeon, as well as news and lifestyle programs from Warner Brothers and BBC America. LIME has also launched LIMEstyle, its own channel for showcasing its latest products, services and promotions.

"Pay-TV is an important component of the communication services bundle, and helps operators gain and retain subscribers," said Aditya Kishore, senior analyst at Heavy Reading. "However, a pay-TV service using traditional IPTV technology is not always practical for every operator. As such, operators need to look at innovative hybrid video delivery approaches in order to stay competitive and grow their revenue."

Disney loses $320M Who Wants to Be a Millionaire lawsuit

Michelle Clancy | 05-12-2012

The eight-year US breach-of-contract lawsuit stemming from the popular game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire may finally be put to rest: a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit issued a Memorandum of Disposition affirming the jury verdict in favor of Celador International against Disney for $320 million.

The lawsuit, filed in 2004, arose over a dispute regarding profits from "Millionaire," which became a smash hit in 1999 and took ABC, now owned by Disney, from No. 4 to No. 1 in network rankings. The show was created by British company Celador International, which licenced the rights to ABC Television and Buena Vista Television for North America. In return, Celador was to share half of the expected profits from the show.

Disney however said that according to its numbers, the show never turned a profit despite being a ratings phenom for ABC for three years and being in syndication for 10 years. In fact, Disney maintained that it generated more $70 million in losses—an allegation that Celador heartily challenged.

After a litigation trial, in July 2010, a federal jury awarded Celador $269.4 million in damages after unanimously finding that Disney subsidiaries − ABC, Buena Vista and Valleycrest Productions − had breached their contract with Celador to share profits. The nine member jury also unanimously found that the defendants breached the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing that they owed to Celador. The court awarded $50 million in prejudgment interest to Celador on that score, bringing the total to $320 million in damages.

The saga drew on: On 21 December 2010, the trial court denied Walt Disney Co.'s bid to overturn the jury verdict. And now, the Court of Appeals affirmed the jury's verdict today in a brief six-page decision.

"Our litigation objectives − to receive what we were fairly entitled to under our contract and to be made substantially whole − were realised by the jury's verdict and today by the Court of Appeals' decision," said Paul Smith, chairman of Celador. "I am pleased that justice has been done."

Celador's trial lawyers, Roman Silberfeld and Bernice Conn, partners with Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi LLP in Los Angeles, said: "Both the trial judge's and an attentive jury's thoughtful and careful assessment of the law and facts were upheld today."

VuMee inks $2MN credit facility for video-sharing platform development

Michelle Clancy | 05-12-2012

Start-up video-sharing site and penny-stock-to-watch VuMee has snagged a $2 million credit facility with Coventry Capital LLC. The funding will be utilised to help build VuMee's sales efforts, marketing strategy, celebrity development, mobile and desktop development as well as its social following, the company said.

"VuMee continues to invest in and enhance its website VuMee.com, mobile apps, celebrity development and user experience while continuing to grow viewership," it said in a statement.

"We are extremely pleased that we have secured additional funding for our continued growth," said Michael Spiegel, CEO. "This funding will allow us to expand our business development efforts and invest more resources into our mobile and desktop video platforms."

VuMee specialises in catering to celebrities looking to viral-video themselves out to the world, but other user-generated videos are on the site as well. The company added, "VuMee acts as a unique platform to hear from consumers, build visual relationships and connect users with their favorite celebrities and bra$$$ through both mobile and PC platforms."

Despite the hegemony of YouTube in the user-generated content space, usage and membership has been rising "rapidly," the company said, as the platform has continued to invest in more user-friendly features, particularly full integration of Facebook and Twitter sharing, along with a complete overhaul of its user interface. Visitors now spend an average of more than four minutes on VuMee.com per visit, and the company said that sign-ups are tracking upwards.

In October it announced that it saw more than 2.2 million page views and 530,000 unique visitors to its website, VuMee.com, in September 2012. The newfound fan-base has now opened up the door to more advertising opportunities, it noted, so it has outfitted it sdesktop and mobile platforms with pre-roll, post-roll and banner advertisements. VuMee also uses push technology to help connect companies, bra$$$ and celebrities to targeted consumer segments.

Mobile, in particular, will be a focus going forward thanks to the new cash injection. The company noted that mobile continues to be a sweet spot for digital advertising according to a report issued by the Interactive Advertising Bureau. For the first half of 2012, revenue in the category increased 95% to $1.2 billion, nearly eclipsing total mobile advertising revenue for the entire year of 2011 at $1.6 billion. Digital advertising revenue across the board for the year through June totaled $17 billion, a 14 percent increase from $14.9 billion in 2011, the bureau reported.

Totalmovie shows off live TV for Latin America OTT service

Gabriel Miramar-Garcia | 05-12-2012

In a move to bolster its value proposition in the increasingly crowded Latin America online streaming video market, Totalmovie has given an advance look its soon-to-be-launched live television portion for its subscription over-the-top (OTT) service.

As RTVN previously reported, Totalmovie, a Grupo Salinas company with a presence in 40 countries including most of Latin America, will offer the combined service on multiple platforms, including the Web (
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
www.totalmovie.com), and Internet-connected devices including TVs, mobile phones, tablets, streaming players and video gaming consoles.

The Totalmovie application will allow users unlimited access to live TV and an extensive Totalmovie catalogue of movies and television series from Hollywood, local and independent studios, including Disney, Sony and sister company TV Azteca. The new service also includes catch-up TV, which allows viewers to see programs from the previous eight days that are automatically stored on the Totalmovie Cloud and network PVR.

The service was demoed at the TV Connect Latin America conference in Sao Paulo by Samer Salameh, executive chairman of Totalmovie. He presented the product interface, showing TV channels received off-air from Totalmovie's Los Angeles lab and streamed live via the Akamai Content Distribution Network. Technical highlights include a one-half to one-second channel change time, which is about 50% faster than the services currently available from digital cable or satellite systems.

Salameh also demonstrated the product on his mobile device.

Totalmovie is contracting with strategic distribution partners to expedite the roll-out of its Internet-based live television service in major emerging markets worldwide it said, including major telcos, Internet service providers and pay-TV firms around the world. It has almost 2 million registered users, and receives 5 million unique visitors to its website every month, making it the second-largest premium on-demand video service in Latin America, behind Netflix.

Netflix US secures Disney exclusive

December 5, 2012 08.33 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Netflix has signed a major deal with The Walt Disney Company that will give it exclusive access to new cinema releases from Disney, Pixar and Marvel, starting in 2016.
The streaming service replaces Starz as the House of Mouse’s lead partner in the US market.
In recent years Disney has found hits with Pocahontas (pictured), The Nightmare Before Christmas and the Pirates of the Caribbean series.
“For us, this is a really big deal – for the first time in our largest market – new Disney movies will be available when and where you want to watch them on Netflix rather than on a premium cable channel,” said Pauline Fischer, vice president, content acquisition, Netflix.
The agreement will put pressure on the cost of exclusive premium content in a market where Disney is often seen as a first mover.
Netflix already runs non-theatrical movies featuring popular Disney characters Tinkerbell, Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh. It also streams content from Disney Channel, ABC Family and Disney XD.
