on_digital_mediaSouth Africa’s On Digital Media (ODM) is transmitting seven test channels out of its Johannesburg HQ.

ODM is using an SES Astra-owned Sirius satellite which covers the whole of Southern Africa from Nigeria in the West to Cape Town in South Africa. ODM has taken space for an initial 55 channels using MPEG-4 DVB-S2 transmission.

Screen Africa, in a report, says that the NDS-protected set-top boxes are now in mass production from local manufacturer UEC (which is already supplying digital terrestrial boxes into South Africa).

A formal announcement of ODM’s precise launch date is expected during the SatCom Africa trade show on April 12-15.
