BBC hires David Bond as sports editor

The BBC has appointed The Daily Telegraph's David Bond as its new sports editor to replace Mihir Bose.

Bond, who is currently sports editor at the newspaper, will join the BBC in early 2010 to provide analysis and context on all the major sport stories - including the World Cup tournament in June and the London 2012 Olympics - across the corporation's TV, radio and online platforms.

In his time at The Daily Telegraph, Bond has overseen coverage of the Beijing Olympics and also handled the 'Bloodgate' cover-up story in rugby union. He will now replace Bose, who left the corporation in August for personal reasons.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity which I simply couldn't turn down and I am extremely honoured to have been given the chance by the BBC," said Bond.

"This is arguably the greatest job in sports journalism and the platform it offers, especially with the London Olympics in 2012, is unparalleled."

Welcoming his appointment, BBC Sport director Barbara Slater said: "We are thrilled David is joining the BBC, bringing with him a formidable track record in sports journalism.

"As our sports editor he will be the on-air figurehead of BBC Sport's News operation. In a highly competitive field he impressed with both his editorial judgement and passion for the role."

BBC deputy director general Mark Byford added: "I am delighted David is coming on board. We are determined to develop the prominence and impact of high-quality sports journalism across our news programmes and services and the sports editor is a pivotal role in that quest. David Bond's flair, insight, energy and expertise made him the outstanding candidate."
