ESPN to go 3D, in June

June 11 will be a red-letter day for ESPN, and for my other sports channels, as 3D coverage of a FIFA World Cup soccer match is showcased. ESPN is promising at least 85 live sporting events in 3D this year.

It is likely that the 3D soccer games, sponsored in part by Sony, will be shown on other pay-TV networks around the world, and while BSkyB’s advanced plans for 3D transmissions are progressing well there is – as yet – no word on whether the summer soccer tournament can be covered by Sky. The TV rights in the UK for the World Cup are held by Britain’s terrestrial networks.

As far as ESPN is concerned it says it will transmit the Summer X Games (for extreme sports) in 3D as well as NBA games, plus college football and basketball.
