ITV secures IPL cricket rights

Thursday, March 4 2010,

By Andrew Laughlin,

ITV has acquired UK television rights to broadcast live games from this year's Indian Premier League season.

Announced today, the deal enables the commercial public service broadcaster to air 59 live IPL matches on ITV4, starting on March 12.

Matt Smith and Bollywood actress Mandira Bedi will present the IPL coverage after they fronted the Cricket World Cup in India. Sony will supply the live world feed for ITV.

Writing on Twitter, IPL commissioner Lalit Modi said: "Fans in the UK - this is what you have been waiting for. Today we have signed IPL to be shown on ITV, the biggest and best TV platform in UK.

"All matches will be shown live on ITV. They will be free and there will be wrap-around shows with it too. So tune in to ITV for the IPL."

The IPL, an eight-strong league of teams playing Twenty20 cricket, features global stars such as Sachin Tendulkar, Jacques Kallis, Kevin Pietersen and Shane Warne.

It is understood that ITV paid the IPL a nominal fee for the rights, which have been available since the collapse of pay-TV broadcaster Setanta last year.

Speaking to The Guardian, ITV director of digital channels and acquisitions Zai Bennett said: "In only two years, the Indian Premier League has already established itself as one of the world's most high-profile and exciting sports events which attracts some of the very best cricketers from around the globe.

"It is an exciting acquisition for one of the UK's fastest growing digital channels and we're delighted to be able to offer the whole tournament free-to-air to our viewers."

In January, the IPL announced a deal with YouTube to stream all 60 games from the league live in the UK.

IPL plans 35 matches in 3D

Thursday, 04 March 2010

Half the matches for next year's Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament could be broadcast in stereo 3D following this year's four match experiment, writes Adrian Pennington.

California's 3Ality Digital is producing the 3D coverage for four IPL matches, including the final, semi-finals and a third place play-off, for the 2010 event which begins March 12.

Digital film distributor UFO Moviez (United Film Organizers) has joined with IPL distribution rights holder Crown Infotainment, to deliver all 60 matches by satellite to up to 1000 screens across India.

UFO Moviez Managing Director, Sanjay Gaikwad, told TVB Europe: "The 3D broadcast of the four IPL 2010 matches will be screened at 70 DCI-compliant screens.

"We are targeting 30-35 matches that would be shown in 3D [for the IPL] in 2011," he added. This marks not only the first live 3D broadcast in the country but the first time that the tournament has been distributed to cinemas there.

With no dedicated 3D outside broadcast equipment in the country, 3Ality will ship its active 3D camera rigs and stereo image processors to Mumbai. It will also involve its trained stereographers from the US, who will work in conjunction with India-based crew.

Analysts Screen Digest report that the country had 150 DCI-compliant cinemas at the end of 2009 run by exhibitors including PVR Cinemas, Big Cinemas, Inox, Fame India, Fun Cinemas and Cinemax India. In addition there are between 1500-2000 of the nation's 12,000 screen total converted to the lower spec e-cinema digital projection system.
